Like any good Russian tome, a cast of some 50+ characters.
Just passed the half-way mark, having been taking my time to really read this, carefully. So far it is phenomenal. Heartbreaking, philosophical, and life affirming.
The NYRB edition that I have boasts an often clunky and deeply anglicized translation, but it's fine. I'm reading past it.
I highly recommend this one. At the point now, with 300 pages to go, where I do not want it to end.
5 Stars as a historical document. 4 as literature. A harrowing read that is ultimately well worth 900 pages of closely paid attention. The final chapter is a beautiful, brilliant, and unexpected capstone to everything that makes it possible, and necessary.
