This is a science fiction novel that explores time travel. Kivrin, a daring young woman, travels from 21st century Oxford, England, to the 14th century. A malfunction places her in the wrong year, and she is forced to contend with the Black Death epidemic, among other dangers.
The story then unfolds in two centuries at the same location as a professor tries to bring her back. A 21st century flu epidemic parallels the 14th century plague, complicating matters. Endearing characters range from a valiant doctor who dies while fighting the flu to a saintly priest who ministers to his small congregation as they face the Black Death. Willis deftly explores a variety of moral issues while creating some amusing minor characters along the way.
