Delphine and her sisters find themselves far away from their home in Brooklyn with the people they love. Big Ma and their Dad have put them on a plane to Oakland California to see their mom. Who by the way has abandoned them and had no contact with them since the day she left. Delphine, Vonetta, and Fern who have longed for their mother, quickly realize upon arrival that is not what they are going to get. She dismisses them and has them head to the center everyday to get breakfast and summer school. While at the center they are surrounded by Black Panthers and this make Delphine uneasy. She feels responsible for her sisters and doesn't want anything to happen to them. Every day after the center they return to take out food for dinner, because they are not allowed in the kitchen. Their mother has a secret in the kitchen and won't let anyone in their. The girls do not know what to make of their mother's secret.
