Babe, Grace and Millie are three friends who marry in 1941 as the boys march off to war. Millie and Grace both lose their husbands on D-Day and follow two different paths: Millie marries again, quickly, and Grace marries her grief. Babe's husband, Claude, returns from war with what we would now call PTSD. Across the two decades this book spans, there is not a social issue that is not touched upon: racism; anti-semitism; sexual abuse, closeted homosexuals. It's as though the author is trying too hard to cover everything relevant. In the end, there is no soul left in the story.
