AS YOU CAN TELL FROM THE !!!! I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!! IT IS AMAZING!!! IT’S ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVOURITES!!! I LOVE THE CHARACTERS AND THE PLOT AND THE WRITING STYLE, AND PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING!!!! Ok I’ll try to stop ranting… but OMG THIS BOOK IS AWESOME!!! (note. not be be negative or anything… but this book still isn’t as good as The Knife of Never Letting Go- which is, in my opinion, the best book anybody could hope to read!) This book is by Jonathan Maberry and it is the first book that he has written for a teenage audience! Rot and ruin is part of a series called the Benny Imura Series (as Benny is the main character!) and it’s sequels are Dust and Decay, Flesh and Bone and Fire and Ash!!! I cannot wait!!! This book is a zombie book, which is partly the reason why I was attracted to it! I love was attracted to it because of the quote on the cover: “In a world full of zombies, who are the real monsters?” Well… it got me thinking.. THAT I HAD TO READ THIS BOOK!!!
Summary
One of the best books in the world.
I was so tempted to leave it at just that…
This book follows the story of Benny Imura, who is age 15 and is one of the people who survived the zombie apocalypse. He lives in a small town, which belongs to a group of towns called the Mountainside.. (for obvious reasons). At the age of 15 the kids there have to find a part time job, and he ends up having to do a job with his older brother, Tom, who he hates (because he thought that his brother ran off with him and left his parents to die… ;( ). The book basically talks about how zombies were people too, and it is wrong to mistreat them; because you wouldn’t mistreat a corpse, and zombies are a type of corpse, they are just half alive. The main part of the story starts when Benny and Tom go off into the Rot and ruin (anywhere outside the towns) to find a kidnapped girl (who I find really really annoying…) and to save her from these evil bouncy hunters who are planning to dump her into a zombie pit and make her fight a zombie… evil….
Cons
THERE AREN’T ANY CONS… except perhaps that the beginning was quite slow… BUT OTHER THAN THAT THERE ARE NOT ANY…!!!
Pros! (there are many!)
The Characters
Tom: I love him!!! He is so awesome!! He is so sweet when someone dies… and he is actually such a good brother… I know my brother wouldn’t ever do any of the things that he did for Benny… He could be one of my all time favourite characters!!!
Benny: He is so funny… because he is sometimes so idiotic…
Nix: I don’t actually like her that much… she is just so needy and she always blames stuff on other people… But I found it interesting watching her develop and becoming tougher and stronger. It’s just amazing at the end, that after all she has been though, she still is half sane…
Charlie: HE IS PURE EVIL…!!! But to be fair, he is smart, very smart, in fact I actually admire his smartness… especially with his traps… , He is also very ruthless… HE IS THE REAL MONSTER!!!
Lilah: She is so cool!!! I cannot believe that she was able to survive for so long just on her own!!!, It must have been a really lonely life… and I feel really sorry for her… ;(
The Plot
It was just so breathtaking and awesome, it literally overwhelmed me…
The Quotes
I know this is quite a small point, but I felt that it deserved to be mentioned!!! I loved the quotes that seperated each of the different sections of the book!!!! One that I really liked was the last one: “Man can live about forty days without food, about three days without water, about eight minutes without air…but only for one second without hope.” I just thought that it was suited to the book so well and it was a really sweet and inspirational quote!!!
The Cover
Just so you know, I’m talking about the cover that is red, not the one with the face… because that is just a little creepy… I love the colour; it reminds me of blood; which is just what I would expect from a zombie novel! I also love the quote, as I mentioned above (the one about monsters!) because it got me thinking, and I was thinking about how many humans aren’t very humane (does that make sense?) and I was then interested what sort of points Rot and Ruin would bring up…
Favourite Quotes! (I know some of these are quite long, but if you can be bothered then read them… they are really good!)
”There are moments that define a person’s whole life. Moments in which everything they are and everything they may possibly become balance on a single decision. Life and death, hope and despair, victory and failure teeter precariously on the decision made at that moment. These are moments ungoverned by happenstance, untroubled by luck. These are the moments in which a person earns the right to live, or not.”
“Closure isn’t closure until someone’s ready to close the door”
“Often it was the most unlikely people who found within themselves a spark of something greater. It was probably always there, but most people are never tested, and they go through their whole lives without ever knowing that when things are at their worst, they are at their best.”
“They won the war but lost the peace”
“That’s stupid.”
“That’s people”
“We had the whole ‘when you assume you make an ass out of you and me’ speech in school”
“Language”
Overall
Overall THIS BOOK IS AMAZING!!! IT IS THE BEST ZOMBIE BOOK EVER!!!! The concept of it really twists and turns your mind, and it is really sweet and amazing!!! It is easily 5 SHURIKEN STARS!!!! As I don’t want this review to be all about me ranting, if you want to take anything away from this review you should take this: GO BUY A COPY OF THIS BOOK.!
