This is why I read and love graphic novels! This huge and also tiny story could only have been told as a graphic novel. Ben is an 11 year old in 1977 in Gunflint Lake, Minnesota who is deaf in one ear and loses his hearing in the other. His story is told in words and pictures in tandem with Rose’s from Hoboken, NJ, in 1927, an 11 year old and also deaf. She has very little language, but she does have movies, at least until she loses them to talkies. Ben and Rose run away to New York City. Each of them are drawn to the American Museum of Natural History. Ben came to New York to look for his father (view spoiler). There, Rose finds a place to belong.
