Wake by Amanda Hocking

I've only read two-thirds of the Trylle Trilogy so far, but that has already been enough to make me fall in love with Amanda Hocking's books! Her creatures? They're always beautifully captivating, and that's no different in this first book for her brand new Watersong series!

Right off the bat, my favourite thing about this book is the sister relationship between Gemma and Harper. As a girl with her own adoring big sis, I couldn't help but smile at the accuracy — especially about how different they are! Harper is practical, straightforward, and a little overprotective of her little sister; Gemma is carefree, openhearted, and in love with swimming. They're polar opposites, yet their perspectives create a fun dynamic that really works.

There are two sets of romances in this book — one for each sister — and both are love-triangle-free and undeniably sweet! ♥ But while Gemma's relationship with the boy next door, Alex, is too adorable for words, my favourite is of Harper and Daniel's. They meet on hilariously embarrassing terms and continue on a little tense, until Daniel manages to break the safe-playing girl out of her shell. I kept giggling into my hand, it was that fun!

But as adorable as this book is, I kept feeling like it was missing something. The characters are sweet but lack a little depth; the siren lore is cool but nothing mind-blowingly original; and it's very predictable. I never had any problem setting it down before finishing, which is trouble for a girl who's used to one-sit reads!

With a sweet factor that breaks the scale and a sisterly bond that will warm your heart, Wake is a fantastic start to a bound-to-be great series! I wasn't as captivated with it was I was with her other books, but Amanda Hocking is still an author to watch out for. :)

BUY or BORROW?: Flaws aside, I still think this book is definitely worth picking up (and certainly buy-worthy enough with that cover)!

Kaylee Magic OMG, I so wanna read this one, Mimi! Aren't you glad that I introduced you to AH?? She's a rocker, that's for sure! (; <333

Mimi Valentine A rocker with super-powers for writing awesome books really fast -- I know that she must've had a bunch of these already written before, but it still blows my mind how she can publish them so quickly! It's good for not having to wait though ;) <3

message 3: by Kaylee (new) - added it

Kaylee Magic Right on, Mimi! (x No wait equals a happy Kay. Is this better or worse than her Trylle Trilogy? (:

Mimi Valentine This one is less captivating than the Trylle Trilogy, but it's still sweet in its own way! I haven't finished it yet so I can't really say anything -- but there's a sweet boy named Alex in it if that counts! :P <3

Mimi Valentine That's justified excitement, Sierra! LOL I feel like there are so many mermaid books coming out now and I'm loving them all :')

Yearning To Read Hahaha well someone did say recently - they're the new vampires. I mean, Stephanie Meyers is conforming and writing a new mermaid story! LOL

message 10: by Mimi (new) - rated it 3 stars

Mimi Valentine Wait, really????? I HAD NO IDEA! *goes to search up that mermaid story* Hehe I have to admit to being a Twilight girl since that's the series that got me into YA :') Thanks so much for telling me about this, Sierra!! <3

Mel Meyers and mermaids, that's new to me. *googles*

I hate it when I feel like I miss something.. But I like the good sister relationship! :D

message 12: by Mimi (new) - rated it 3 stars

Mimi Valentine The sister relationship was the main reason why I adored this book so much (because I seriously love my own sister too)! LOL and I'll get my goggles ready with you, Mel x) (They're pink! <3)

Ahahahaha well, as I haven't read Meyers, I'm not sure if I'll read her mermaid story or not. BUT, I am looking forward to The Host. ;)

message 14: by Mimi (new) - rated it 3 stars

Mimi Valentine The Host was my favourite! It starts of strange, but then you reach a certain point when it's impossible to put down even though it's like 500 pages long LOL x) You have to finish it before the movie comes out!!! :)

Mimi Valentine From the Lovely Bones, right?? Saoirse was AMAZING in that movie, and I know she'll do a great job as Wanda/Melanie! I fangirled all the way through the teaser trailer, and it's not even the real one yet LOL... x) <3

Yearning To Read Actually i havent seen the lovely bones - i loved her ss Lina in The city of Ember!! :) suuuuuper excited!! :)

message 18: by Mimi (new) - rated it 3 stars

Mimi Valentine City of Ember? Oooohhhh, it sounds sort of like the Mortal Instruments series LOL! x) I know they're probably nothing alike, but... *adds movie to TBW list*

Yearning To Read omgomgomgomg MIMI!!!! you haven't watched it?? you haven't read the book????? OMG!!!!!! dude!! The book is an all time favorite - I've read it about 4 Times!! Mimi, darling, u haven't yet lived ifvu haven't read that book!!!

message 20: by Mimi (new) - rated it 3 stars

Mimi Valentine That good? FOUR TIMES?? LOL then I guess I'll HAVE to watch it ASAP! x) Good thing we're having movie weekend with my cousin tomorrow -- I'll request it!

Yearning To Read Hahaha but as in all cases, the movie isn't nearly as good as the book, so let this be an introduction to the awesome story, and then read the book and be awed. :D

message 22: by Mimi (new) - rated it 3 stars

Mimi Valentine I'm not surprised -- the book is almost always better than the movie! x) But I think I'm going to have to do that first, because otherwise I'd probably end up being disappointed with the movie if I read the amazing books first ;) <3

message 23: by Eunice (new)

Eunice Although it was a bit predictable and lacked a little depth this still sounds interesting and I'm glad you still end up enjoying it. The romance seems like a really sweet one too! Awesome review, Mimi! :D

message 24: by Mimi (new) - rated it 3 stars

Mimi Valentine It really is, Eunice! I think it's only because I had high expectations from her Trylle Trilogy, but I still love the way AH crafts her stories :) <3

message 25: by Jasprit (new)

Jasprit I love how sometimes when a book doesn't work out for you always manage to bring out the best parts of it and make me still want to pick it up! Gorgeous review Mimi! :)

message 26: by Mimi (new) - rated it 3 stars

Mimi Valentine Awww, thank you so much, J! This book wasn't perfect, but it's still definitely worth the read :) I hope you like this if you decide to give it a shot! <3

message 27: by Sam (new) - added it

Sam I've been wondering about this book. Great review, Mimi! :)

message 28: by Mimi (new) - rated it 3 stars

Mimi Valentine Curiosity is an awesome thing! I know that you liked Amanda's Trylle Trilogy, so I really think you might love this too, Sam :)

message 29: by Hilda (new)

Hilda Lovely review like always, Mimi! <3 It's too bad that the characters lack some depth, but I'm glad that the romance is sweet and most important, triangle-free! <3 Hehe, your sentence about adoring big sis makes me smile! <3 My sisters are adorable sometimes, but most of the time they just make me crazy LOL! x)

message 30: by Mimi (new) - rated it 3 stars

Mimi Valentine I think that's a sister's job LOL -- driving the other sister crazy! My big sis is actually graduating twelfth grade tomorrow and I couldn't be more nostalgic. It's going to be weird not having her go to school with me anymore! :') <3

message 31: by ♥Rachel♥ (new)

♥Rachel♥ I love my sister, so sister stories are always an attraction for me. Romance that begins in an embarrassing situation sounds like a lot of fun! Lovely review as always, Mimi! :)
