This book is really two stories, the story of Matilda of Hay and the story of modern (1980's) day investigative journalist, Jo Clifford and her lovers, friends and enemies. The historic fiction story is much more fascinating and unfolds in an enthralling manner. I was pretty tired of the modern day characters and relationships as the book dragged on...casual drug use, hypnosis, regressions to past lives, feminist agendas and other issues, most so contrived it is almost embarrassing made that story quite disappointing to me. I was never tempted to stop reading because Matilda's story was interlaced but I did not really enjoy myself trudging through the modern parts. I was actually quite glad when it was over so it rates only 2 stars for me.
