I wish I knew how ZS is able to so effortlessly capture the family dynamic in writing. In retrospect, On Beauty is a strange that illuminates each characters' desires to transcend their own self-imposed limitations. It's often stark, yet almost painfully funny. ZS writes with such humanity and wit, she inspired me to start writing my own stories about family life. One of the cardinal rules of writing (I'm often told) is to write what you know, and I sincerely believe much of On Beauty is an encapsulated look into Smith's own life.
