Testimony

I was lucky enough to get a galley of this book, and I zipped right through it. It's likely inspired by the Duke Lacrosse scandal, as it revolves around a similar scandal at an upscale New Hampshire prep school. The chapters are told from the various points of view of the people involved, from the basketball players, parents, alleged victim, friends, and school administrators. The story moves very quickly and definitely makes the point that every story has multiple interpretations and how the actions of the few can impact the many. I generally like Shreve's historical stories better than the contemporary ones, but I really did like this one.

What did you think of the 14 year girl in the story? Did you feel empathy for her or did not not like her?

Both, I think. I didn't like her at all, and I felt like she never really took responsibility for her actions. I think it is a little sad that she would rather not be looked at in a bad light, nor does she want to get in trouble herself, rather than make her part more public, thus making things a little more "right" for lack of a better word. I think I was most angry at her, because if she had been more honest, things may have turned out differently. And, I feel sad that she never really realized how her actions effected others.
I liked the format of this book, other than trying to remember who was who. I only gave it 3 stars, mainly because it was difficult to get into, my memory may not be as good as some, so it was a bit annoying trying to remember some of the characters, it was not a pleasant subject and was incredibly sad.
