I'm all for satire, and I think Libba Bray is hilarious, but Beauty Queens was way too heavy-handed for my taste. Bray puts forth a valiant effort at making use of every single stereotype about teen girls that has ever existed, but it gets so confusing at times that it's not half as effective as it could've been if only a few of those stereotypes were tackled. Also, there's no real depth to it. Not that I expect huge depths from every satire, but I at least wanted to feel something for the characters, no matter how ridiculous they could be at times, and I didn't.

I think this would've been a lot funnier/more effective as a short story, or a novella, but at 400 pages it's just too much.
