Although all of the Harry Hole mysteries are billed as stand-alone novels, this one really benefits from having read The Snowman first, if only to better appreciate its invocations of Thomas Harris' Hannibal Lecter books when Hole consults with the culprit of the previous books' grisly slayings. The modus operandi of this book's murders is very Saw-like, and its twists and turns are as thrilling to follow as The Snowman's. Now I need to go back and read the earlier Hole books, which are conspicuously referenced in this volume.
