I was fortunate enough to receive this book through the Goodreads First Reads program and am glad. I enjoyed this book. The main character, Ellen, is a hypnotherapist who meets a man named Patrick and then the story is about their relationship over time. He has baggage (a seemingly perfect wife who died and left him to care for their son, an ex-girlfriend turned stalker) and Ellen is someone who is used to being in control of her emotions (she is a therapist after all). The relationship brings up many issues for Ellen as she questions the ethical uses of her profession (can you use your techniques on your partner or should that boundary not be crossed?) as well as how she reacts to things around her (why is she so intrigued by the stalker instead of having any fear? why are her emotions out of control?). You also get a taste of the stalker's psyche as you hear things from Saskia's perspective as well (and I found that I had a lot of empathy for her). It was a story that delved into the frail emotions that we, as women, can often get caught up in while in a relationship. How do we deal with a lover's previous relationships? How do we differentiate ourselves as a lover? How do we keep everything around us together and yet, still multi-task? How do we learn to let go and move on? All in all, an enjoyable read. I'd say it would be a good one for the summer, on the beach or by the pool...
