I was very impressed with MJ McGrath's knowledge of Inuit culture presented in White Heat. She gives the reader a very clear picture of what life is like in the Arctic and a very strong sense of place. The examples of Inuit language are fantastic and so very different structurally from our own.

I found the main character, Edie Kiglatuk to be interesting and memorable. She's tough, caring and strong. There is a lot of violence and sadness that she has to cope with in her world and of course, since this is a mystery there are some deaths she feels to compelled to deal with.

Unfortunately, I had a bit of a hard time following the mystery and keeping some of the other characters straight. I would, though, be very interested in another story with Edie Kiglatuk as the protagonist.
