** spoiler alert ** I get why people read Franzen - this was easy to read, easily digestible, and yet feels like it's supposed to be a "smart" read. Except... just, ugh. Pop music is terrible, too. How'd this win a National Book Award? I'm resigned to point out the obvious: people are idiots.

Spoiler alert: all of the Lamberts are ingratiating, and the old man dies about 550 pages too late.

Ashley I heard Jonathan Franzen on NPR once and what he said really made me angry. I can't remember what it was, but I do remember that he came off as a pretentious douchenozzle. Will not be reading either of his books, so good to know I'm not missing much.
