This is the story of a teenaged girl from Moldova who, when orphaned and facing an uncertain future at home, signs on to be a nanny for a Russian family in America. She quickly realizes that her situation is not what she expected when the family takes away her return plane ticket, instructs her not to leave the house or speak to anyone without permission, and makes her work from dawn until the wee hours of the morning. She is in essence a modern-day slave, kept in line with lies and fear for her family back home. The main character, Hannah, is engaging and the story fascinating - I could not put it down and found that I missed Hannah when the book was over! I recommend this title to any teen who would be shocked to learn that there are domestic slaves in many places in America even today - perhaps even right next door.
