I am a William Boyd fan as a rule but from the outset I didn't really connect with this book. I got the Midsummer Night's Dream reference and the acting analogy but I didn't really care about the characters and felt that I was being led down blind alleys for much of the time. I didn't understand the part his Mother had played. Was it intentional or accidental? Maybe it was a little over my head! Having said all of that I still awarded it 3* due to the quality of the writing which is always consistent from William Boyd. Overall though, disappointed.
