really liked it
bookshelves: teen, fantasy, mystery

I was surprised by how much I liked this book. Keri, Janna, and Sione, three teenagers in New Zealand whose older brothers all (supposedly) committed suicide, begin to suspect that their siblings were actually murdered and decide to investigate. They quickly realize that the town of Summerton is just a little TOO perfect and they begin to suspect that there may be some magic involved.

The drawbacks I see to this novel are that it was really kind of straightforward and predictable. Every hunch was correct. There were no dead ends. You could see where things were going a mile away. But, really, it didn't make it less enjoyable. The characters were distinct and well-imagined. I also enjoyed getting little bits and pieces of New Zealand culture in with the story. And I really loved that the ending (one year later) described some real struggles, as well as the happy stuff.

This is Karen Healey's second book and I look forward to seeing what she writes next.
