Unique and action packed, this was definitely an interesting read! The City's Son is set in modern day London... except there is a "sub-world", co-existing with our everyday one, in which the streetlamps house electric beings, garbage walks around, and phantom trains battle it out. This book is very detailed, which I found to be a bonus... especially when it came to picturing some of the creatures in my mind. The pace is brisk, as the action never really stops, and there are many interesting characters to meet.

Urchin is a complicated boy, he sweats oil and feeds off the chemicals and toxins around him. He is very much a part of the city. He is cocky, but seems to soften once he meets Beth. He seemed a bit thrown when she decides not to run away, which was funny. Beth is a lot tougher than she seems, and she is very persistent in her desire to stay with Urchin. She was really quick with her decision to leave her life behind, and that kinda bugged me a bit. There really was no hesitation, it didn't seem like something a person would do. I really did not like Beth's best friend, , she was a very depressing character and rubbed me the wrong way. But, there is usually one character in each book that I read that I dislike, so that's normal for me.

The secondary stories involve Beth's relationship with her father, and the disaster that her best friend has put herself into... I think that just one of those story lines would have been enough, 2 seemed a bit much at times. I enjoyed reading this, although there were a couple spots that were a bit long. I would recommend it to: fans of urban fantasy, readers who like books with "sub-worlds", and anyone looking for a change from their usual YA read.
