Don't know where I got this book, but found it while culling stacks at home. Hadn't heard of Jim Thompson, but did recognize "The Grifters" and "The Getaway" - films based on his novels.
Lewd, crude, rude, manipulative, sharp smart, hateful, often hilarious, and deep-down, dadgum disgusting. But truthful.
Nick Corey, High Sheriff of Potts County, TX, maneuvers himself in and out of trouble as he tries to exact his own kind of justice on horrible people, becoming a sadistic psychopath himself, but one with a Christ complex. Shades of Nathanael West? Hunter Thompson? Kafka on bad-language high? Deepest Dostoevskian Underground Man?
I liked Pop. 1280, but don't know right now to whom I'd recommend it. Maybe I'm uncomfortable with liking it?
