Wow. I read some negative reviews of this book here on Goodreads before I'd finished, and while I agree that the subject matter is pretty bleak, I thought the novel was stunning. Koestler's prose is sparse and tight--right on the money throughout the whole novel--and Rubashov himself is both painful and beautiful as he grapples with the meaning of his life. The ending paragraph punched me in the gut.
