A wonderful account of a young girl (Ha) and her family as they flee South Vietnam at the end of the war, from their difficult boat trip and rescue at sea to their relocation with a sponsor in Alabama and the difficulties that can arise with trying to fit into a whole new world. Most touching for me is Ha's new school situation especially as she has to learn a new language and learn how to read. Ha's frustration with reading will be appreciated by any child who has trouble with verbs. "First Rule Brother Quang says add an s to nouns to mean more than one even if there's already an s sitting there" "Whoever invented English must have loved snakes."
