Shelter (Mickey Bolitar, #1)
by Harlan Coben
by Harlan Coben
Loved this book. Mickey Bolitar's father has died(view spoiler)[--or has he? (hide spoiler)]. He's the child of two do-gooder parents and has spent his life until now traveling the globe with them. Now they've gone home so Mickey can have a normal high school. Mickey's mom falls apart at his father's death and becomes a junkie. (I did wonder if she'd ever had drug problems before...) His girlfriend disappears, and the local Bat Lady is somehow mixed up in the mystery that Mickey sets out to solve. Mickey is Myron Bolitar's (star of Coben's adult mysteries) nephew. His search for Ashley takes him to the Bat Lady's house, a seedy strip club, and more, and makes him join forces with goth outcast Ema, nerd loner Spoon, and hot girl Rachel. Really enjoyed this fast-paced story. Great characterization, real life high school stuff, mixed with unbelievable stuff like awesome martial arts skills that let Mickey best professional thugs. (view spoiler)[Turns out his parents were really on some kind of rescue organization, helping girls sold into white slavery. Ashley was one of the girls they were helping. And the bad guy, Antoine, is really a good guy. And Mickey's dad really might not be dead, because the paramedic he remembers is also the Butcher of Lodz (or his son), who the Bat Lady has been searching for. She was Lizzy Sobek, a child during WWII who helped other children escape. She's been hunting for the Butcher all this time, as he killed her father, and he's the same guy who took Mickey's dad. (hide spoiler)] Look for the sequel--there WILL be one, right?
