Combines the real world of an old women who fosters an angry boy (John)as he copes with his life after being taken away from his mother and his abusive father with the imaginary world of the creatures (Littlest One/Gossamer) who gather memories from everyday objects in their world and then give them back to humans in the form of dreams. The dream bestowers attempt to protect their humans with dreams strong enough to counteract the nightmares spread by Sinisteeds.

Well written, thoughtful, powerful story by Lowry, who ends the story with the promise of hope.
