i am simultaneously amused and bemused by jonathan carroll's books. they make so much sense and nonsense at the same time.

they also remind me of one of my favourite poems, by stephen crane:

Many red devils ran from my heart
And out upon the page,
They were so tiny
The pen could mash them.
And many struggled in the ink.
It was strange
To write in this red muck
Of things from my heart.

Moira Russell Stephen Crane! I like him a lot.

Maureen he's the best. i'm a big fan. i actually had a much longer review about the wooden sea but goodreads lost my first draft and then my re-write so this is all i could muster. i compared it to first reading madeleine l'engle in that i am so often surprised at the turns in these carroll books. it's like you're walking in the garden and a seraphim shows up. but in carroll he steals your watch. :)
