Up until the novella that closes this book, and from which the title is taken, I was thinking three stars. The stories are good, but not gripping. But "Poachers" itself is a brief but epic work of Southern literary splatter fiction worthy of William Faulkner or Cormac McCarthy. Dark, haunted, violent, surreal, peopled with characters you'd never wish to meet, yet are filled with sympathy for as their lives are played out to their inevitable ends. Five stars can't do this one tale justice. The rest of the book is good, but the title story shouldn't be missed.
