The diary of Mooch, the puppy

Day 1 of my heaven

I have a new home!
So happy!
Two girls Keira and Kate played with me!
So happy!
Then their amazing mom Vi fed me.
My favorite place in the world!

Day 5 of my heaven

A new man, Cal-who-is-also-Joe came over to pay with me!
My favorite thing in the world!
I think he's my mistress's mate. He sniffs her and follows her around. I don't think he marked his territory, though, because there's another male Mike that also comes and sniffs her.
Cal makes me happier.
Then the girls walked me.
So happy!

Day 20 of my heaven

Cal-who-is-also-Joe is not coming around anymore. I think it's because he made them all mad. Mike's here often. There's also some strange gifts arriving, that make my mistress scared. They won't let me play with the gifts, though.
Then a new male Dane came with Kate and petted me.
So happy!

Day 140 of my heaven

Cal-who-is-also-Joe is living with us!
And there are no more gifts!
Everybody's happy and the girls let me play with the-neighbor-Tina's shoes.
My favorite thing in the world!

Quotes

“We’re all lost, Mike. The best chance we got is to wander this life with the people who matter.”

"He was also broad; his shoulders in his black leather jacket were wide and unmistakably powerful.
And he’d been beautiful, once. It was plain to see, under what he was now, that his features had once been perfect, high cheekbones, an appealingly sharp slant to his square jaw, a strong brow. Now there were lines coming in arrays from his eyes and more around the sides of his frowning, full lips. And there were also scars down his left cheek, two from about a quarter of an inch under his eye that curved over his high cheekbone coming closer together and ending where, if he had a dimple, his dimple would be. These scars were not puckered or disfiguring outside of the actual marks. They just marred the faultless male beauty that had once been his face, making it, with the addition of the lines, rugged and interesting and more than a little scary.
All of this, with his dark, unruly, way overlong hair, was enough to make him look sinister in a compelling, magnetic way.
And then there were his eyes. Sky blue eyes. Sky. Fucking. Blue."

“Joe!”
“Bein real, buddy, you should know that and you should talk to her about condoms.”
“I’ve already talked to her about abstinence.”
Joe burst out laughing and I froze, listening to the richness of it. I’d never heard him laugh. I wasn’t even certain he could laugh. He was my hot-as-shit, bad boy, player, next door, security to the stars booty call. He was a serious, scary, rugged, sinister, alpha male. Men like that didn’t laugh.
When his laughter died down, I could still hear its timbre in his question. “Your folks talk to you about abstinence?”
“My mother is asexual. I think my father kidnapped Sam and me.”
“Everyone’s mother is asexual.”
“Not like my mother. She’s a robot programmed to one emotion, disapproval.”
“See you’re close with your Ma.”

“Next time I’ll bring my cannoli,” Aunt Theresa declared.
“Shit, I’m gonna get fat,” I muttered and Bea laughed.
“From what I can see, hon, fat, skinny, your hair can fall out and Joe won’t care,” she said.
This was true too.
“Yeah,” I smiled at her."

The scales of Happiness and Love

“I’ve got more on my scales,” I whispered in reply.
His fist unclenched and his hand cupped the back of my head as he asked, “What?”
“You keep unbalancing the scales, giving me more. It’s not fair.”
He was silent a second then he asked quietly,
“You shittin’ me?”
I shook my head.
His other arm went around me and he pulled me up his chest until I was face to face with him.
Then he spoke.
“All I ever wanted was a good woman and a family. All my life, with a slight variation on theme, that’s all I ever wanted. Buddy, you’ve given me both. You think, givin’ me that, I could ever balance those scales?”
-------------------
“Joe?” I called.
“Yeah, baby,” he answered.
“Scales are even,” I told him on a whisper.
-------------------
“Crash,” Joe whispered back and I blinked.
“What?”
“That’s the sound of my side of the scales, buddy,”

The return of Kitty Wilson

"Colt and Feb standing, Colt had Jack in one arm, his other around Feb, Feb had a gray cat in one arm, her other around Colt and their puppy was sitting on Colt’s foot, his tongue lolling out. They were all smiling, even baby Jack and the puppy looked like they were smiling although the cat looked like he wanted to be anywhere else but there."

Mimi's note

I liked this book a lot. The only reason this wasn't clean 5 stars is the Mike/Joe/Vi mess. It went on too long, IMO, and at the time I thought the rating would be even lower. However it was redeemed. Also, to mention, even though the triangle situation was more serious than in, say, Mystery Man, here it was handled more maturely, and it wasn't just "woe is me, I'll flit from one man to the next". Vi wasn't foolish, and though I think she did wrong to both of them for a while, I understood her.
The mystery wasn't as extensive as in the first book, but it was present. I loved both Vi and Joe(especially Joe, my favorite KA hero so far), not to mention the girls.
This is definitely my favorite KA series so far.

Erika *talking to myself*
I'm starting to get scared with KA's fans.. They've been attacking my feed for months, chatting and reading and reviewing KA's books.. looks like they won't read books by another author anymore. It's terrifying.. I need a hug..

Mimi Smith @Erika...

Don't tell me *gasps, and looks around*...You mean....you haven't...read anything by her?

Am in state of shock!!!!

And us KA fans are rabid, so watch out...
As to your hug...

Kristen Great review. Mimi. I'm not a fan of love triangles and I'm glad Kristen Ashley doen't use that plot often, but like you, I may not like what she was doing, but I understand Vi's actions. Joe created that mess, he deserved the consequences. Mike, however, did not! He better get one fantastic heroine!

Mimi Smith Thanks! And, yeah, I'm not a fan either, and I think KA uses it more than enough. These situations, when another man is interested in a heroine and she runs to him when things are not going well with the hero. Like...Sweet Dreams and Mystery Man. It just annoys me. Here, it went a step further, since she was dating one man and sleeping with another. Totally not fair to Mike, as you mentioned. I'm not sure why I was willing to overlook it here. Maybe I liked the rest more than in other books? Who knows.

message 9: by Kristen (last edited Mar 09, 2012 07:45AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kristen I think I'm ok with it because everyone is up front about the situation. Joe is honest with Vi. Vi is honest with Mike. She never made a commitment to him and then jumped back into Joes bed. Mike knows where he stands with her. I didn't like it, but Mike's eyes were open and he still chose to go after her. I don't admire Vi with her choices in this area, but I also understand she was a 17 year old girl when she met her husband, who was so awesome, and basically doesn't understand what she is doing. I really believe that she's naive a little in this situation. Doesn't excuse her behavior, but makes it understandable. Unlike Gwen who was flat out a slut. Jumping from guy to guy. Vi is not a slut like Gwen. Her world was destroyed and she's doing the best she can. That's why this story works for me and Mystery Man did not!

KatLynne Great review Mimi! I loved Joe too and he is one of my favs!

I agree, that could be it. And Gwen IS a slut, and Vi...isn't, but it was a bad situation all around and wasn't handled well by Joe or Vi.

And in Mystery Man there was that, plus the fact she let a man she didn't know into her house to have sex with her for two years. Unbelievable...

Gwen sleeping with a man she didn't know for almost 2 years was unbelievable. I couldn't get past that part. She was horrible that way. Even when things were solid at the end with Hawk, she still wondered to herself if Mitch was a snuggler. WTF?! I still can't figure out why Mitch and Tack were so taken with her. Of all KA heroines, she has the least substance to her character. Still dont get it.

message 14: by Mimi (new) - rated it 4 stars

Mimi Smith Me neither! THREE AMAZING, HOT guys fight for her, and chase her! Why? She whines, she can't make up her mind she's got the self-control and attention span of a gnat. Really, the only reason that book got 3 stars from me is Hawk.

Kristen Me too! That is the only reason I gave it 3 stars too. That and the epilogue. Mystery Man had a fabulous epilogue. Like I said in my review, Gwen was the reason I gave the book 3 stars. It so sad because I had just finished Lady Luck and that book has my all time favoirte heroine. I just loved Lexie. Then I get Gwen next. Talk about going from one extreme to the other. Lol.

message 16: by Mimi (new) - rated it 4 stars

Mimi Smith I liked Lexie a lot, too! And Tess :) They're my favorite.

The epilogue...yeah, KA writes incredible epilogues. They always leave me content and happy for the couple.

Kristen Exactly.

I'll try to respond tomorrow, if I have the time. Love talking with you, girl. Hope I at least succeeded in getting one KA book on your TBR pile.

Just wait, GREAT DEFENSE HERE! I have a counter attack I PROMISE you that!

Btw about miss-spelling of your HAWT, was it my fault if YOU were the one who typed it first in your message #14..

message 31: by Mimi (new) - rated it 4 stars

Mimi Smith Erika, about Hawk/Hawt. Hawk is a hero in one of KA books, but when thinking of my fav KA heroes I realized he's not one of my favorites, so I changed then names to those who are Ty, etc... and as a play on words changed HAWK to HAWT. Still, you made me think sweet thoughts about Hawk, too.

As to my strategy-I thought force would wield most results and we were leading a war... But if not...

Here you go sweety...NICE THINGS

message 32: by Erika (last edited Mar 13, 2012 09:32PM) (new)

Erika Hawk/Hawt whatever.. you're definitely failing as KA's agent :p Think as sweet as you want to about that HawkHawt guy but don't play your sweet with me. Doesn't fit with you, you realize it right? :p instead it makes me suspicious...
