I hand out many five star reviews - these days I scout my books with purpose prior to reading, so it's rare to find any that, compared to the bulk of printed texts, are not worthy. If I could give "The Leopard" six stars, it would receive them not only because of its excellence, but because its final passages moved me deeply. The final image of a dog's carcass cast from a window - a quadruped form momentarily furious as it pitches through the air - then still and quiet among the trash - hit hard. The strength of the blow cannot be considered an accident - it resulted from Lampedusa's deliberate premeditation - and affirms his mastery. Though he wrote only one novel, few authors, despite more titles by far to their credit, would happily trade their many mediocrities for this one book's singular excellence.
