The book was in deed an easy to read book where children can read and follow the illustrations along very easily. The book is about a chicken and two children Earl and Pearl, who are growing a pumpkin patch and even though the chicken just scratches the dirt and follows the kids around, the children are allways shooing the poor chicken, but still she is with them the whole time. One day when the children have their pumpkins they notice that grasshopers are invading the pumpmkin patch, and the chicken comes to the rescue by yelling "cluck" making the grass hopers jump away from the pumpkins. The chicken gets three pumpkins for her bravery at the end of the book.
Judyann Grant and Sue Truesdell did a great job in combining the illustrations and text together. The child could see the picture and than read the small text that had a few words per page. The repetition of the letters and the sounds are in this book help the young reader with recognizing the letters and sound they make.
