Charlotte was mugged and her hip was broken. Thus begins a chain of events that include a interrupted love affair, a messy divorce proceeding, a scholarly disappointment, a business downturn, etc. etc.

It reminds me of the old PBS show "Connections" in which an unlikely chain of events/inventions affect some unlikely proceedings that lead to an unexpected conclusion.

We meet some nice people, some not so nice people, some weak people, and some strong people. Their interactions are the story.

It is a fast read, and requires little reader involvement, but I did become a bit invested in Rose, thinking that hers was the saddest and at the same time most noble of the interwoven events.
