For the first three fourths of Duma Key, I kept thinking, "This is the best King novel to date, bar none." King does a fantastic job of developing the characters and making them "real" to the reader, so real that the reader cannot help but care about what is happening to them at the moment and "may" happen in the future. The setting is tightly drawn in King's inimitable style, the descriptions vivid, and the plot captivating. Moreover, although the story contains some chilling moments when the reader just "knows" that something is amiss on Duma Key, it hardly classifies as a horror novel but more as a character study of two "damaged" men, each of whom is seeking redemption of sorts and finds it on Duma Key. Well, at least that is the case up to the final fourth of the book when the storyline rapidly degenerates and becomes an at times cartoonish attempt at horror. And this is the point where King completely lost this reader, for it was here that I began thinking, "All right now, Stephen, you had a good thing going, so why go and spoil it."
