One of the reviewers of this author's work used the word "lurid" and that's probably the perfect word for this book too. In the first of this series, Heartsick, Detective Archie Sheridan barely makes it out alive from the clutches of serial killer Gretchen Lowell. He finds himself completely obsessed by her; and feeling guilty about it. That part of the book is a little hard to understand but the writer pulls it off.
The book has two cases going on at the same time, the on-going concern with Gretchen and a story being pursued by reporter Susan Ward about the well-loved governor. Dead bodies connected with the story keep her from getting her story out in print. Are the two stories somehow connected? The ending is absolutely heartstopping and even a little frustrating - enough said. If you can take the torture, obsessions, and tension; this is might be the book for you. A quick, can't-put-it-down book that isn't necessarily for everyone but is a grabber.
