There is far too much bloodshed to call it Young Adult, but the plot themes don't fit directly in the Adult world of books either. This then, is a mishmash. On the one hand the main character has some truly horrible things happen to her, far beyond what a normal protagonist in the YA genre are to endure. But, on the other, to keep it from moving into the realm of adult fiction the emotional consequences are removed. Bad things happen, but you never get a sense that they changed or shaped Shin's character.

I'll keep reading the novels because they do show promise, but personally, I'd rather Mr Marmell chucked the whole YA premise and just wrote an adult novel. It would have been much more enjoyable.
