I've seen the two movies based on this book years ago, and I've always wanted to read it. And I wasn't disappointed. There's something alluring about reading a book that explores extreme cruelty. And it was interesting to get more information on the characters and their past.

I'm not usually a fan of epistolary novels, but I quite liked this one, and I think the letters helped contrast the two 'cruel' characters with the 'normal' characters, and made it even more obvious how deceptive these two characters are and how well they manage to fool the other characters.

Some of the love letters were a bit repetitive and didn't add much to the story for me, but I guess they were necessary to the story. The letters between Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont were, however, very amusing.
