I have not read the rest of this trilogy, but because this book is a prequel I don't feel like I had any trouble reading it on its own. There were things that I liked about this book, and things that I didn't. Set in the time of the Russia Revolution, I loved the social aspects of the story. In fact, reading about what was going on at the time politically and socially were the best parts in my opinion. It was an extremely interesting time in history. The love story was just okay for me. I felt like the characters were somewhat flat and the story flowed a little too seamlessly for my liking. I honestly spent most of the book wishing I was re-reading The Bronze Horseman. I don't know that I'm going to go on to read books one and two.
