not having read any ruskin or proust previous to this, in the beginning, i felt that i was missing certain things here and there, mostly about their overarching philosophical and literary beliefs and practices. that being said this work proved to be an excellent introduction into the works of both authors and provided great insight into proust's ideals of reading and experiencing thoughts portrayed by the author and continues into exposing, in great detail, ruskin's thoughts on life, both found in books and in general.

i would like to read a little more of both authors in my attempt to further my knowledge of the classic (or older) writers.
