I received this book through the First Reads program, and to be honest, I typically don't go for animal stories.

That being said, however, this book really surprised me with how much I was drawn into the story. I was constantly hoping that Justine would find Mack, and each obstacle that got in her way just made me want to root for her more. Her flaws made her appear very realistic, very human, and that made me sympathize with her plight all the more. What I really loved though was how one dog could could bring complete strangers together and change their lives for the better. Mack was able to bring the Parmalees back together and help them heal in the aftermath of the tragic loss of their child, and I found that message to be incredibly powerful.

Overall, if you're looking for a story that will touch your heart, The Dog Who Danced, fits the bill perfectly. It had humor and joy, but it may also make you tear up at times.
