really liked it

I had read two of Nevada Barr's books featuring Anna Pigeon several years ago, and decided it would be interesting to see what Anna was like earlier. I was planning to just skim through it, maybe read more slowly if and when I got to the parts that showed what Anna was like before she became someone who, like Mark Twain, prefers animals to people, and is a decided introvert with no patience for fools. I found that I couldn't put it down. I had my suspicions about who the villain was, and, as I'm wont to do, skipped ahead to see if I was right. But once I had ascertained that yes, I had correctly guessed "whodunnit" I still couldn't put the book down. I went right back to where I had been and kept reading. Reading, not skimming.

I highly recommend this book, not just for getting a peek at who Anna was before she became the park ranger in the rest of the series, what inspired her, what she overcame, and how she dealt with adversity, but also for a well crafted mystery.
