This installment of PB Ryan's Nell Sweeney/Will Hewitt series was wonderful! Two deaths occur after the gold crash engineered by robber baron Jay Gould -- both look like suicides due to financial ruin -- but are they? Will has performed the autopsies and suspects foul play, engaging Nell to help him solve the mystery. This one intricately weaves historical fact and fiction in a much more deft way than previous books have. You get a real feel of the crash of 1869 and the effect it had on families and friends. Yes, unfortunately ne'er do well brother Harry is again an initial suspect but that is quickly rectified and Nell and Will go on to pursue the real villains.
These books are so much fun and really quick reads so it would be easy to think that the writing is simplistic -- but it's not. There is a lot of detail and characters pop in and out with quick alarming speed. Sure you can zip through this in a few hours but it's the writing that makes it so easy.
