I couldn't help comparing this novel to last year's Caudill nominee The Rock and the River. This offers a gentler picture of the Black Panther movement while still touching on the threat of violence that hung in the atmosphere where the Panthers were active. A lot was going on in this story between the mother and daughters, and the three sisters, that I found a bit hard to relate to - but I feel that this is more my fault (or the fault of my life's circumstances) rather than the author's fault. This would be a very successful book in the hands of the right reader.
