Stirring are travel books about rain forests, mountains, and oceans, but the few books about deserts convey the complex feelings of happiness and satisfaction encountered in their austere settings. This is the classic 1968 account of the author's season as a Park Ranger in Arches National Monument near Moab, Utah. Some parts are redolent of that unique time in US history and other parts are timeless.
