The book Homeless Bird, by Gloria Whelan was a fabulous historical fiction read about a girl named Koly who is forced into an arranged marriage at age thirteen, but when her husband dies within the first week of marriage she is forced to become a widow and live under the orders of her evil Sass. Through the years Koly finds ways to ignore the harsh comments from her Sass about how she is good for nothing, and a disgrace to her family, she always had had someone to talk about her problems to like her sister-in-law and her Sassur. But when her Sasusr dies and her sister-in-law marries and moves away, her Sass brings her to a city and abandons her there. In the city she had to find a job and a place to live and meets a handsome young boy named Raji and they later fall in love and get married. I think that the authors message in this story is that you can not be assigned true love and that everything happens for a reason. The author also educated readers on how arranged marriages take place and what they are like. I would recommend this book to anyone in need of a really good short read.
