I loved this book. The story about the slave who created the quilt and the reasons why it was so special really did make sense. I especially liked the historical portions of the book. This told how much slaves were treated as less than human. They were only valued for what they could do for the owner. They had very little in the way of possessions. Their spouses and children could be taken away on a whim. They were expected to get along with little sleep, rags for clothing and very little food. Yet, most of them had a drive to live and did what they could to get along. This was an excellent story of a woman who was determined to live. I discovered there is a previous book about the same slave which takes place prior to this storyline.

This has encouraged me to read her other books. However, this particular story is about a negro slave who escaped and was captured in 1859. I am already getting emotionally involved with the character."
