I picked this up solely on its National Book Award nomination. The synopsis didn't strike me as all that interesting, but perhaps promising. As it turned out, it was a pretty worthwhile read. The blurb on the back portrayed the book as being more of a conflict between the hippies and the people in Alaska than it really was. It was actually more about regional/cultural differences, especially in regards with what it means to be in commune with nature and live off the land. There were a few too many characters to really get to care too deeply about all of them, though there are a few that are fairly well-drawn, if perhaps missing an emotional center.
