An affecting tale and good first effort. I didn't see as much character growth as I wanted (our narrator seemed to get stepped on by pretty much everyone, and I've never responded well to those kinds of stories). And the blurb makes it seem like a sweeping saga along the lines of some of Amy Tan's stuff. But, viewed from the perspective of a look into the life of this woman, her family and their experiences, it is satisfying. I did feel like, though slight already, there was some dragging and it could have lost about 75 pages or so to make this a stronger, more gut punching read. But I will certainly pick up future books by Chung.
