4.5 stars - Nightborn: Lords of the Darkyn ended up as probably my favorite of the Darkyn so far. There is a darkness to Viehl's series that often leaves me with mixed reactions to her books despite the fact that the writing and the characters are so good. There still plenty of death in Nightborn but not as much in the moment torture, just fades to black where we know what's going to happen or the aftermath mentioned here and there. The leading man is Korvel, who was bad-guy-ish in one of the earlier books - under orders from the Darkyn king Richard, Korvl had kept Alex enthralled but ended up falling for her. Korvel's intro here is pretty sympathy stirring and I found it easy to forgive him for past misdeeds once I knew more of his backstory and how important his vows and his honor were to him - and how Richard abused those vows. I really like his heroine, Simone - a lot - she is deadly sweet and awesome and her backstory is just as intriguing as Korvel's and results in some pretty great action scenes.

Even though Lords of the Darkyn is a Darkyn spinoff, Nightborn is really a continuation of the early series, at least character-wise, with some familiar faces: Nicola and Gabe in a supporting role and others from the series - including Alex - turning up here and there. However, it did look like there might not so much of the Brethren this time - which I am totally fine with - and I am intrigued by the Tresora council and the Sentinels - there definitely looks to be more to the devoted servants than their masters realize. Oh, and I had forgotten that the Darkyn started out as Knight's Templar - I have a thing for the Templars.

So I really loved this first Lords of the Darkyn and am looking forward to the next book Nightbreed which supposedly has Thierry's, Jamys, in the lead.

jD I await your thoughts on the new series. I loved Darkyn when Viehl was writing it. I am excited to know she is not done yet.

But as a tease, there are definitely other old Darkyn characters in supporting roles and in the background, and no Brethren so far yet, but some interesting info on the Tresora counsel and a tie in to the Night Templar origins of the Darkyn in the artifact that is at the center of the story. I actually liked this one the better than some of the other Darkyn, because there wasn't in the moment torture - we just hear of the results or there is a fade to black where we know what's going to happen.

Ezinwanyi~For you, Agron (Mira, Crixus, Gannicus & Spartacus) Her new editor wanted her to rid the new series of the Bethern because they were so sinister and all the torture stuff. Since she is trying to increase her sells numbers (and thus be able to sell more books to the publishers), they didn't go with the evil Bretherns

jD I will miss the brethern. What is the point in making bad guys if they are not bad? from a marketing standpoint, i can understand trying for the larger appeal. I am just too blood thirsty...LoL

Ezinwanyi~For you, Agron (Mira, Crixus, Gannicus & Spartacus) @JD:
LOL. you ARE blood thirsty. I don't think editors care about the integrity of the story. I mean the brethern, their experiements and John Keller are an integral part of the story. But they also refused a book on John so they just want her to sell books.
Obviously Nic & Gab are fan favorites because they appeared in the Kyndred series too!

I was hoping that Michael would have appeared in this book and kicked Korvel's butt or at least tried to stab Richard for ordering Korvel to seduce Alex. Nope. No bitch slap for King Cat-face or his seneschal!

new_user I was really interested in the revelation of (view spoiler)[the new species (hide spoiler)], and I'm really intrigued to read more. I thought Jamys already got a novella, but maybe I'm mistaken. Does he remain young? That should be interesting.

I liked all that we saw of the Tresora in Nightborn, but I miss the Brethren. I must also be bloodthirsty because I thought this one was more fluffy and less edgy. I'm dying to see more of Tremayne and his tresora. Is that true that the publisher turned down a book about John, E? That is so disappointing. I love him.

Ezinwanyi~For you, Agron (Mira, Crixus, Gannicus & Spartacus) ummm, yea, you are bloodthirty too! LOL. I do miss the Brethern. they also made the story captivating.

Yes, Jamys had a book Incarnatio and it is with the same girl Christian/christine?
Jamys & Chris are the subjects of Nightbred.

She hasn't written a book about John yet, but said she has it in her head. She also has a book about Phillipe (Michael's Cyprien's seneschal) but that would also be an online release.
I asked if she would release a book on John online, she said she is still finishing up Nightbound. Viehl also said that Jayr, Aeden and Robin will make appearances.

They turned down Richard's book too. The name of the book is Chrysalis. The editor said that Richard was irredeemable, so Lynn Viehl is going to release his book online later on this year. I don't know who the heroine is, but I told Viehl that Richard belongs with Eliane (his tresora) because she has put up with too much.

Have I mentioned that I hate Richard? I am with Nicola Jefferson when it comes to Richard Treymayne.

jD How the hell are they not writing a book about John. I pre-ordered this one for Kindle or I would give it away. As for blood thirsty, I confess. I was more open hearted until I fell in love with Downside of Ghost. It's gonna take a minute for my book matabolism to reset. I am hurt that I can't count on Viehl for my rough stuff going forward. Ward has lost her edge too. WTF!

Ezinwanyi~For you, Agron (Mira, Crixus, Gannicus & Spartacus) @JD: Viehl is writing them, editor & publisher are not buying them. So one has to try to either try to self-pub, or post online for free. Or figure out how to make money on your work and still keep fans interested and happy.
Seems like authors walk a tightrope with their work.
Remember, she wasn't done with the Darkyn stories when they pulled the plug on it last time. She has a new editor now, but it's still a numbers game.

Say what you want, but the pre-order price for Lover Reborn is still $14.99, just $2 cheaper than the hardcover. JR Ward is still killing it on sales. Ridiculous. I went to reserve it at my library and I am patron 69--so I may just order it for my kindle and then hate myself if the book sucks. But number 69 means I won't read it until October or something.

I am resigned to the fact the BDB is going in a different direction than the 1st 4. It is setting up a new series for the BoB in my opinion.
I don't see why Lassiter is getting a BDB book, he should get a fallen angel book. But then again, I didn't agree with Rehv getting a book either.

I don't know, but Lover Reborn will determine if this series falls from #1 on my favorite list.

Okay you have move way beyond this today while I was at work but I think that we should have seen that too.

Thanks for all the info on the online read too, I am going to have to look out for them.

Ezinwanyi~For you, Agron (Mira, Crixus, Gannicus & Spartacus) @melindeloo:
We sort of hijacked this post (LOL)!

When she posts the books online, I will let you know either here or on the Read, to read...forum on amazon.

new_user Aw, no love for Richard? I am so happy to hear she'll be releasing his book. I will be all over that thing. I agree, Eliane should be his partner.

I like the grit of Downside Ghosts too. I hope Ward hasn't lost her edge. That's what attracted me to her books. I didn't mind that she moved towards UF in later books. I haven't read Lover Mine yet.
