****1/2. Other than Naguib Mahfouz, this is the only Egyptian writer I've read. Al Aswany paints a fascinating portrait of life among a group of Egyptians from various economic and religious backgrounds in Cairo around the the time of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. Really really good!
