I really enjoyed the writing in The Shipping News. It was different, refreshing. And, although I prefer an author not bounce between points of view, the glimpses into different heads were brief enough not to be distracting. If anything, they added to the story.

I also enjoyed getting to know the characters and setting. Annie Proulx obviously is obviously Newfoundland and I felt her portrayal of the place carried the proper combination of humour and respect.

That's about where the charm of his novel ran out for me, however. Halfway through, I found myself wondering what the actual purpose of the novel was. Whether Quoyle was actually going to achieve anything or not. I did make to the end I was satisfied by the conclusion - I found it an effort to remain interested, though.
