Did he make an ex-girlfriend go dead inside by sleeping with her cousin? Or is he just projecting his own inner moral death? Is his first crush really back in his life or is it just the light of a distant star, a star long dead but beaming a light more dazzling and real than anything else in his life (his metaphor, not mine)? Only Murakami could spin the tale of a admittedly self-centered, ethically challenged manchild who thinks nothing of sleeping around on his beloved wife and is experiencing an existential crisis into a surreal romantic mystery.
