There has been a lot of controversy surrounding this book and the motivations of the author. I do think that Mimi Alford wrote this book with pure intentions. Her affair with the President was outed by the media over 10 years ago. If she was truly looking to profit, she would have accepted the paid interviews, book deals, and movie deals that were offered to her at that time. She didn't. This affair affected many of the events in her life after President Kennedy died. I believe that she is telling her story now as a final step in her healing process. Yes, she will make money, but profit is not her primary goal.

What is most interesting in this memoir is the peek it gives you into the White House in the pre-computer, pre-internet days. While it could still be a stressful environment, the picture painted is far more relaxed than I could ever imagine at the White House today. Staffers worked 9 to 5! Who does that anymore?!

Another interesting, and somewhat shocking, revelation is how other White House staffers and friends of the President helped him to find women and arrange meetings. This wasn't just the secret service keeping their mouths shut. The President had a complete systematic approach to womanizing and was assisted by numerous people close to him.

Lastly, it is remarkable that Alford speaks so highly of the President to this day. She does not speak ill of him anywhere in the book. There is no bitterness, just the realization that SHE had a lot of choices and SHE choose to have the affair too.
